Hills Street Sports Medicine Centre (HSSMC) being part of the “Hills Street Group” was founded by Sports Physiotherapists Peter Buffon & Denny Shearwood back in 1984, as a result of the then growing Central Coast’s involvement and participation in sport, and the emerging community awareness of sporting injuries (which was very much regarded as rural rather than urban when compared to Sydney).

It was a common occurrence back in those days for local sportsmen and women to travel to the metropolitan area to seek expert opinion on their particular sporting injury. Any person who can remember the 70’s and was playing sport would be familiar with Lewisham Sports Medicine Institute which ostensibly employed Orthopaedic Surgeons and Physiotherapists who worked collaboratively in the diagnosis and treatment of sports injuries.

Through this recognition for such a service on the Central Coast, Peter and Denny established a network of expertise in all the disciplines that constitute a Sports Medicine Team, formulating a true multidisciplined team of professionals. It is common place to read on advertising signs and hear on the media about sports medicine establishments, and there are indeed at least more than one such establishments in every suburb or town in Australia. From a purist’s point of view, these places of business are only riding on the wave that the practice of Sports Medicine has been on for the past couple of decades, in that they only of one or maybe two aspects that make up what truly constitutes a sports medicine centre.

Hills Street has truly established and focused on the specialization of Sports Injury Management when the centre first opened, in that there are Physiotherapists, orthopaedic specialists, massage therapists and exercise Physiologists that practice their respective disciplines from the number 1 Hills Street address.

On site is a fully equipped and functional rehabilitation gym that houses specialist pieces of equipment that are specific to rehabilitation of certain injuries. HSSMC with its 23 years of operation has become one of the if not the oldest established multidisciplined sports medicine centre’s in Australia. First opening its doors at North Gosford Private Hospital and spreading its branches to Terrigal, Woy Woy and Erina.

Even though there are 5 full time Physiotherapists there uniquely remains both the original principals at the helm.
